What We Do
The Newcastle Bar Society is dedicated to providing aspiring barristers with comprehensive exposure to the legal profession through a diverse range of events designed to build skills, knowledge, and professional networks.
Our signature events include exclusive court trips to Newcastle Magistrates and Crown Court, as well as the prestigious Supreme Court and Inns of Court in London. These experiences provide invaluable insight into the judicial process and courtroom advocacy. We also organize competitive mooting events, from local competitions to inter-varsity challenges, allowing members to develop and showcase their advocacy skills.
Networking and professional development form the cornerstone of our programming. Throughout the year, we host networking events with local barristers, Big Bar meetups featuring panel discussions with leading chambers, and specialised career talks in partnership with BPP and ULaw. These events are complemented by monthly Q&A sessions with guest experts and field focus panels where professors share insights from different areas of legal practice.
We believe learning should be engaging, which is why we integrate oral and written advocacy training throughout our calendar. Our advocacy competitions, judged by practicing barristers, provide real-world experience in a supportive environment.
Beyond professional development, we foster a strong community through social events. We also maintain an active presence at university events like the Freshers Fair, complete with costumes and wigs to spark interest in the legal profession.
